assateague ship piece

BERLIN, Md. - Like a time-traveling relic from the high seas, a weathered piece of a ship's soul has washed ashore on Assateague Island.

According to Maryland State Parks, Assateague State Park staff members discovered a piece of an old ship had washed up on the beach. The department says it consulted with Maryland Historic Trust staff and the 14.5-foot timber is believed to be from the mid-to-late 1800s.

The agency says the item was first spotted in December. It has been tagged so that it may be tracked once it gets swept out to sea and eventually washes up on another beach.
