LEWES, Del. — The Lewes Fire Department responded to a fire at the Red Mill Inn off Coastal Highway early Monday morning.
The call came in around 6:30 a.m., with crews arriving to find fire showing on the patio area of a single-story unit.
The structure was occupied at the time of the fire, according to the Delaware State Fire Marshal. A woman and child were able to escape without an injuries by exiting through a ground floor window.
Delaware Deputy State Fire Marshals responded to the scene and conducted an origin and cause investigation. It was determined that the fire was an accident and caused by the spontaneous combustion of oil-saturated clothing located in a hamper on the exterior patio of the structure.
Fire damage was estimated at $3,000.00 and there were no other reported injuries, according to the fire marshal.
State Police were directing traffic at the entrance of the Inn. The Lewes Fire Department had the fire under control within 45 minutes of the call.
