DELAWARE - Energy costs in Delaware have led to a bevy of bills in the state legislature. Lawmakers are looking to rein in the cost of everyday utility expenses. Delmarva Power has pushed back against some of those efforts and on Monday they released some energy-saving tips that they say could help people keep their bills from shocking their wallets.
Energy Saving Tips:
- Adjust Your Thermostat: The Department of Energy suggests setting the thermostat 7°-10°F higher for eight hours a day, which can save up to 10 percent annually on cooling costs
- Service Your Air Conditioning Unit: Regular maintenance and changing air filters can help keep the system running efficiently. Customers can also use an AC coil cleaner for cost-effective cleaning
- Test Energy Efficiency: Use an infrared thermometer on a warm day to measure air vent temperatures. Vents should blow air between 55-65°F, and indoor air should be about 20 degrees warmer
- Monitor Energy Usage: Through Delmarva Power’s “My Account” feature, customers can track usage, receive notifications of increased energy use, and obtain personalized savings tips.
- Seal Drafts: Use caulking or weather-stripping around windows and doors to prevent warm air from entering the home
- Block the Sun: Invest in awnings, blackout curtains, or keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to reduce cooling costs
Energy Assistance Programs Available Until March 2025:
Delmarva Power is also offering what they call energy assistance programs through the end of March, including:
- No late payment fees for January, February, and March 2025
- Extended repayment periods
- Suspension of physical disconnections for nonpayment through March 2025
- Waived deposits for disconnected customers seeking service restoration
Quick Home Energy Check-up Program
Delmarva Power also pointed to its Quick Home Energy Check-up Program as a way to mitigate costs. The program is available in Delaware and Maryland and provides a virtual or in-person assessment of a home’s energy use. An energy analyst will conduct a walk-through, provide a report with recommendations, and may install energy-saving products at no cost.
