LEWES, Del. - According to the Cape Henlopen School District, classrooms are becoming overcrowded. At a recent Board of Education meeting, school representatives mentioned there at currently 6,600 students in the district, and they only believe that number will go up.
One parent who spoke with CoastTV said the increasing student population is a testament to how excellent the school district is, but he worries overcrowding could hurt a student's education.
"You know you want your kid to have the most attention from the teacher, and the overcrowding issue is something that could severely affect how they are learning," explained Josh Barr, a parent of the Cape Henlopen District.
The district believes a number of the students enrolled, do not live within district limits. Before coming up with new school boundaries, the district says they are first going to investigate student residencies. Residency concerns can how be reported on the tipline on the district website anonymously.
One taxpayer told CoastTV they think education funding at large is the bigger issue.
"So the people who are fleeing, I believe they should actually hold their own districts accountable and to a higher standard and really figure out why they're not happy in the districts where they're currently residing," stated Abraxas Hudson, a taxpayer in the Cape Henlopen School District."
At this time, the district says their main focus is to even out the population in the five elementary schools. Love Creek Elementary School specifically is facing a serious overcrowding issue, and the total student population is now 681 students. The district says they are still looking for ways to solve what they call an over enrollment issue.
