LEWES, DE. - According to the Delaware Farm Bureau, the cost of Thanksgiving dinner in Delaware is higher than the national average this year. Data gathered from the American Farm Bureau's annual Thanksgiving dinner survey shows the average national cost for a 10 person Thanksgiving feast is $61.17. For Delawareans though, that cost is $64.05.
The Delaware Farm Bureau told CoastTV, "Nationally we did see a decline in the cost of the average Thanksgiving dinner, that is the case here in Delaware too, and even though the cost of Thanksgiving dinner is a little higher here, we are seeing a decline in the food prices from a record high that we saw last year," explained Jenn Antonik, Public Relations for Delaware Farm Bureau.
Shoppers are divided as to whether or not prices are cheaper this year. One shopper says he was prepared for certain items to be expensive, and was shocked to see items he was expecting to be reasonable more expensive.
"I would say it seemed like the canned goods were more expensive than usual", said Dennis Hoffman, who lives in Lewes.
One customer on the other had thought this year's shopping was much less expensive than the year prior.
"It's much cheaper this year, and the turkey was especially less expensive," stated Jim Gassner of Milton.
While the cost of Thanksgiving dinner in Delaware is higher than the national average, the Delaware Farm Bureau says the overall cost of produce is lower because farmers are more recovered from the pandemic this year than last year.
