Milford proposed mixed-use building

A vacant lot in downtown Milford could soon be transformed into a four-story, mixed-use building featuring up to 16 apartments and several commercial spaces, such as a rooftop restaurant and bar.

MILFORD, Del. - A vacant lot in downtown Milford could soon be transformed into a four-story, mixed-use building featuring up to 16 apartments and several commercial spaces, such as a rooftop restaurant and bar.

The city previously approved the building's density and width variances but not the height change request.

According to the applicant, Zack King, the proposed apartments would be affordable — a key point for local Barbara Graffeo, who says accessible housing is increasingly difficult to find.

“There are a lot of people looking for places, and they're having a really hard time,” Graffeo said. “Due to the cost of living and the expenses, it's something that would be very purposeful.”

King says he's striving for sub $1000 one bedroom places and sub $1400 two bedroom apartments.

While the project promises new amenities and housing options, not all residents are on board. Some neighbors have raised concerns about potential disturbances from the rooftop business and the height of the building, which they say would stand out uncomfortably compared to others in the area.

Despite those concerns, others welcome the idea. Michael Torain, a Milford local, believes the development could add vibrancy to the community.

“A lot of people, especially in Milford nowadays, are coming in from cities. They'll probably find that very interesting,” he said. “I find it interesting. I like tall buildings anyway, because it reminds me of the city.”

Officials will discuss the project at a Tuesday city council hearing at 6 p.m.
