DELAWARE - The Delaware Department of Agriculture is encouraging Delawareans and visitors to shop at local farmers markets during Delaware Grown Week, which runs from May 18 to May 25. The state aims to break last year’s sales record of $4.5 million and surpass $5 million in 2025.
Governor Matt Meyer said the campaign not only supports small farms and businesses, but also helps people eat healthier and connect with their community.
“When you choose food grown in the First State, you connect with your community, reduce food miles and enjoy fresh, seasonal produce that’s good for you and the local economy,” Meyer said.
Sales at Delaware farmers markets have increased steadily over the past few years, from $3.72 million in 2021 to $4.14 million in 2023 and $4.46 million in 2024. The department says that growth reflects increased interest in local vendors, fresh food options and community engagement.
Two long-running markets are marking milestone anniversaries in 2025. The Riverwalk Farmers Market in Milford is celebrating its 30th season. It operates from May through December and offers local produce, crafts and art.
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is marking its twentieth year. Open Saturdays from May to November, the market features more than 30 vendors offering produce, seafood, dairy, baked goods and other local items.
“On-farm markets and local farmers markets provide not only fresh, healthy foods, but a sense of community that brings people together,” said Agriculture Secretary Don Clifton.
