DOVER, Del. - Delaware LGBTQ+ Commission Vice Chair Vienna Cavazos plans to resign from the commission effective Sept. 12, according to a release from the commission.
“This decision was not made lightly. It has been an honor to serve my community. As the youngest current member of this Commission, and a youth political organizer before that, I have spent my time advocating for youth LGBTQ+ rights and centering the crisis young people are facing,” said Cavazos.
Cavazos notified the office of Gov. Matt Meyer on Aug. 5 of their intention to step down. Cavazos, the commission's youngest current member, has focused on LGBTQ+ youth rights and advocacy during their time on the commission.
“Vienna has brought passion, perspective, and a real commitment to public service to the Delaware LGBTQ+ Commission, and I’m grateful they answered the call to serve,” said Meyer.
The commission was launched in January 2025, during Bethany Hall-Long's brief time as Governor. The goal of the commission is to strengthen connections between state government and LGBTQ+ organizations, improve service delivery, and address barriers for those in the community.
Meyer made the initial appointment of nine Delawareans to the commission and, later, expanded on membership focused on inclusivity and visibility. Following Vice-Chair Cavazos’ departure, the LGBTQ+ Commission will be left with 13 Commissioners.
