GEORGETOWN, Del.- Phase 8 and eight miles of the Georgetown To Lewes Trail is now completed.
Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski says whether you are a walker, a cyclist, or just love the outdoors the Georgetown to Lewes Trail has proven to be a popular route for multiple reasons.
"It is not only to provide the connection to communities but it's helping people commute, helping promote healthier lifestyles, it's just so needed," Majeski said.
Groups like the Sussex Cyclists ride around the county all of the time. President John Kurpjuweit thinks DelDOT's work helps ease some burdens with traffic.
"The trails have become so popular in the area Kurpjuweit said. "It's giving people a chance to ride and walk without the stress of having to compete with traffic."
The latest addition is ten feet wide and nearly marks the halfway point of the entire trail.
With another route into Georgetown, more people are expected to visit the local businesses. Mayor Bill West says that should help the ones that are still struggling due to COVID-19.
"Economically we need this because I've still got businesses that haven't closed up but they're struggling and any opportunity I can give a business to help them that's what it's about," West said.
Stina Pillion and her friends intend to visit some of those businesses on their rides from Red Mill Pond.
"We can't wait to be able to ride from where we live to Georgetown and have a beer stop here and coffee and all kinds of great food," Pillion said.
Georgetown is planning to put a parking lot near the entrance of the connection on Parsons Lane. DelDOT says construction on the next phase will begin in the spring.
Only nine more miles to go until the Georgetown to Lewes Trail is complete.
