The intersection of Dorman Road and Lakewood Drive has been a serious cause for concern in Lewes' Lochwood neighborhood for years.
Neighbors say it was the site of a deadly crash back in 1989, and there have been many close calls since. "Everyone in the community has a near-miss story that happens to them," Louise Finn, President of the Lochwood Property Owners Association, said. The problem is drivers can't see around the bend as they come in and out of the neighborhood, and cars tend to speed taking a shortcut from Route 24. The solution, neighbors say, is a stop sign. Finn says they asked DelDOT for that stop sign. They will do a traffic study in the coming weeks to determine the best move. "We do try to expedite these requests as quickly as possible, review them, and if there's any changes we feel need to be made or additions, we will absolutely do that," said C.R. McLeod, DelDOT's Director of Community Relations. They've also spoken to state police. Troop 7 told them it's not a top priority because there haven't been serious accidents, and it's ultimately up to DelDOT. Neighbors say accidents happen at the intersection all the time. They told us road signs are often getting run over. They've even tried cutting down some trees on Dorman Road for a better view of oncoming traffic. "They could clear a lot more, cause you've got to see up the road," said Earl Werkheiser, who lives in Lochwood. One reason they so desperately want this fixed is because the school bus stops right at the entrance to the neighborhood. "We're also working with Cape Henlopen School District to try to get the bus stop changed to inside the community," Finn said. Several neighbors agree that something needs to be done before it's too late. "I hope that this will be done and it takes my peace of mind that no one will get hurt before it's too late," said Donald Paladino, who lives in Lochwood. We reached out to Delaware State Police, who say there have been no accidents at the intersection this year. DelDOT says it could take several months to determine if the intersection is dangerous and what will be done about it. We will provide updates as they come.
