GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Delaware Department of Transportation has announced the contractor who will complete the Georgetown-Lewes Trail in Sussex County. Out of five contractors, the final phase project was awarded to Atlantic Contracting & Material Company, Inc. at a bid of $17,495,207, said DelDOT Friday.
The final expansion project, is slated to add just over 6 miles to the existing trail from Fisher Road in Milton to Airport Road in Georgetown. Once the trail is complete, it will be a total of 17 miles long.
The Georgetown-Lewes Trail was first unveiled in October 2016. According to DelDOT, the project will include the construction of a multi-use trail along and adjacent to the state owned railroad there, as well as road intersection improvements where the rail line crosses a road and, "-will improve mobility, connectivity and safety for bikes and pedestrians."
An elevated boardwalk, safety fencing, drainage improvements, kiosk installations, site amenities and signage are also included in the project’s description. The project’s contracted time to complete is 397 calendar days, according to DelDOT documents.
