carter figgs service

DELMAR-- 16-year-old Carter Figgs was remembered as a young man of integrity, humor, and kindness at a memorial service on Sunday.

Hundreds packed the Delmar High School gymnasium to pay tribute to Figgs, who was killed in a car crash earlier this month. The 17-year-old driver has been charged in the crash.

Figgs was a passionate football player. His former Pop Warner coaches spoke at the service, remarking how Figgs went out of his way to learn the game and be the best player he could be.

"Carter was one of those kids where size didn't matter to him, said Mike Jackson. "Carter was always willing to learn his job...[to] get back down and get back up."

One of Figgs' teachers, India Elliott, recalled how Figgs was emotionally intelligent and helped mend a relationship between a difficult class and Elliott. She called Figgs' "everyone's friend."

"Carter was always cracking jokes, but unlike many kids his age, he preferred everyone be in on his jokes. No one ever had to be the butt of a joke with Carter and the whole class could play along," she told the crowd. "In fact in the three years I've known him, I can't think of a single time he was ever mean spirited to anyone or put anyone down, even if that was what was going on around him."

Figgs was a junior at Delmar High School. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Delmar Athletic Booster Club, 200 N. 8th Street, Delmar, DE 19940.
