DUCKS RESCUE

Ducklings found under a stormwater grate near Oak Orchard Rd. They were rescued and reunited with their mother (Indian River Volunteer Fire Company).

MILLSBORO, Del. — The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company rescued six ducklings early Sunday after they became trapped in a stormwater drainage system at the Riverside Apartment Complex off Oak Orchard Road.

The citizen assist request for an animal rescue came in at 12:34 a.m. Sunday, July 12. Fire company personnel determined the ducklings had fallen through a stormwater management grate and were trapped in a drainage reservoir within the retention pond.

After evaluating the situation, responders put on water rescue waders to safely access the drainage culvert. The rescue operation included securing the area, opening the access point, luring the frightened ducklings to safety and reuniting them with their mother.

Once all six ducklings were rescued, crews placed them in a safe area near the mother duck. She responded to their peeping and led them to a nearby body of water.
