MILFORD, Del. - The Food Bank of Delaware is looking for fresh produce donations from local gardeners and farmers.Ā
The food bank provides food to people in the community through their on-site food pantries and mobile food pantries. Some of the fresh produce provided comes from grocery stores that have an excess of food.Ā
Vice President of Communications for Food Bank of Delaware says that receiving fresh produce is important for a number of reasons as many of those that visit the food pantry have dietary restrictions.Ā
"People are so grateful for the fresh fruit donations. Often times, low income people have diet related conditions. They might have diabetes or high blood pressure," explained Turner. "So it's really important for us to get nutritious, fresh foods out of those individuals."
Sixth generation farmer, Henry Bennett, told CoastTV he understands the importance of donations to food pantries.
"We also distribute to several faith based food pantries in the area in an effort to provide nutritious fruits to members of our community that may not be able to access them otherwise.Ā
When you enter the food pantry, you are greeted by an employee who will guide you as you shop ad select what you need. The pantry welcomes any size donation, from boxes to truck loads.Ā
The Food Bank of Delaware helps anywhere from 100-150 families daily at the on-site pantry in Milford. Turner says that number doesn't include the 100-200 people that are helped through the mobile pantries every day or the food pantries throughout the state that the provide to.Ā
The food bank is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday.Ā
