SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Delaware State Parks invites you to kick off the New Year in an outdoor adventure on Monday, January 1, 2024. This year, the First Day Hikes program offers a mix of guided and self-guided hikes in various park locations across Delaware. Some of these hikes have limited space and require pre-registration, so read on to plan your ideal New Year's Day outing.

Whether you're an experienced hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, there's something for everyone. Here's a quick rundown of the available hikes:

1) Cape Henlopen State Park - Point Comfort Station Hike

-Time: 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM

-Location: Point Comfort Station Parking Area

-Description: Start the year with a guided hike to explore the importance of the Point. Dress for the weather and carpool as parking is limited. Suitable for ages 7 and older with an adult. Pre-registration is required for this hike.

2) Cape Henlopen State Park - Point Comfort Station Recreational Hike

- Time: 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM

- Location: Point Comfort Station Parking Area

- Description: Join a recreational hike around the Point. Dress appropriately for the weather and consider carpooling due to limited parking. Suitable for ages 7 and older with an adult. Pre-registration is required.

3) Cape Henlopen State Park - Self-Guided Hike

- Time: 10:00 AM to Noon

- Location: Cape Henlopen Nature Center

- Description: Explore various trails in the park with a self-guided hike. No registration is required, and you can pick up a map and information at the Nature Center.

4) Delaware Seashore State Park - Sunset Hike 

- Time: 3:30 PM to 5:15 PM

- Location: North Inlet Day Use Area

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

- Description: Enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Bay on this self-guided hike over the iconic Indian River Inlet bridge at sunset. Check-in with park staff at the welcome station. No registration is required.

5) Fort Miles Historical Area - History Hike

- Time: 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

- Location: Fort Miles Trailhead of the Pinelands Nature Trail

- Description: Embark on a history hike to learn more about Fort Miles. Suitable for ages 7 and older with an adult. Pre-registration is required due to limited space.

6) Fort Miles Historical Area - History Hike 

- Time:  9:00 AM to 9:45 AM

- Location: Orientation Building in the Fort Miles Historic Area

- Description: Dive into the history of WWII-era Fort Miles on this guided hike. Suitable for ages 7 and older with an adult. Pre-registration is required.

7) Trap Pond State Park - American Holly Trail Hike

- Time: 9:45 AM to Noon

- Location:Baldcypress Nature Center at Trap Pond State Park

- Description: Visit the first state park in Delaware and explore the American Holly Trail. Leashed pets are welcome. No registration required.

All hikes are free, and participants are advised to dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, wear appropriate walking shoes, and use sun protection when necessary.
