GEORGETOWN, Del. - A new gate has been installed at the Sandhill Fields Trail parking lot in Georgetown to curb late-night disturbances.
According to Mayor Bill West the gate, which was added last week, aims to address growing safety concerns raised by locals.
Neighbors have reported a rise in inappropriate activities during the late hours, with some mentioning sightings of drugs and alcohol use. "I've seen police patrols here before," said Mark Belilse, a nearby local who uses the trail several times a week. While he has not experienced personal issues, Belilse acknowledges the need for the gate, noting the excessive sights of “unsavory things” at night.
Courtlyn Whaley, another frequent visitor, emphasized the importance of safety, especially for families. "You never know who's lurking around, particularly late at night," Whaley said, adding that the gate provides extra security.
In August of last year, there was a break-in at the fields that resulted in thousands of dollars worth of equipment being stolen.
As of 8 p.m., the parking lot is closed off, and the gate is securely locked. Sandhill Fields was contacted for more information, but did not reply.
