Dogs in park

This new program launched on Wednesday and includes DocuPet’s HomeSafe® 24/7 lost pet recovery program.

DELAWARE - Delaware dog owners, there is a new online option to get your pet licensed. The goal is to make it easier to reunite pet and owner if your dog runs off. This new online portal is the result of a partnership between the state’s Office of Animal Welfare and pet registration provider DocuPet.

This new program launched on Wednesday and includes DocuPet’s HomeSafe® 24/7 lost pet recovery program. According to the Office of Animal Welfare, this partnership will make licensing more accessible while reducing the number of stray dogs that end up in shelters.

“Our new partnership with DocuPet will be extremely valuable to dog owners and necessary for animal safety within the state,” said Christina Motoyoshi, director of the Office of Animal Welfare. “Licensing your dog helps reduce the number of animals in shelters, freeing up space and resources for pets in need.”

How it works:

Each licensed dog gets an identification tag that is connected to an online profile. If your pup goes missing then owners can quickly file a what's called Lost Pet Report. Meanwhile, if you're someone who finds a stray or missing dog that has a DocuPet tag you can use the code on the tag to submit a Found Pet Report, which will help get dog and owner back together again.

Delaware law requires all dogs over six months old to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. To help get everyone up to speed the state is waiving late fees for expired licenses until July 15. Existing licenses remain valid until their current expiration date.
