SALISBURY, Md. — The Salisbury community mourns the loss of Greg Bassett, the esteemed founding editor of the Salisbury Independent.
Bassett's contributions to journalism on Delmarva spanned a lengthy career, with significant roles at the Daily Times. Bassett's impact reached far and wide, and at the time of his passing, he held the position of Managing Editor of INI's Maryland publications. This notable portfolio included oversight of the Salisbury Independent, Dorchester Banner, the Crisfield-Somerset County Times, and BayToBayNews.com.
In an article issued by the Salisbury Independent, Editor-In-Chief Andrew West was quoted as saying: "We're stunned and saddened at his passing. He lived and loved newspaper work. It was an honor to work with him."
Bassett's passion for journalism was front and center throughout his career. On his LinkedIn page, his About Me section was written as follows:
I have devoted my career to community newspapers through the writing and editing of local news stories. I believe the role a newspaper plays in a small community is crucial to that city or town's progress, reputation and -- ultimately -- quality of life. To me, a local newspaper is a serious enterprise that relies on public appreciation and trust.
My energies are spent helping identify community problems, charting community aspirations and guiding programs to reach their potential. I encourage the public to take action when needed. I work to celebrate community victories and stimulate a sort of interaction that brings people together for the public good.
I will always seek to keep my community fairly informed, so its citizens can always conduct themselves as full participants in our democratic processes.
Bassett was 63 years old.
