OCEAN CITY, Md. - As temperatures climbed along the coast Wednesday, Ocean City saw a familiar summer scene—crowds flocking to the boardwalk, umbrellas dotting the sand, and ice cream shops buzzing with business.
Riley Smith, who has worked at Dumser's Dairyland on the boardwalk for five years, said the heat always brings in waves of customers. “We just opened, and we’ve already had two car full of customers,” Smith said. “So it’s definitely going to be a busy day.”

Riley Smith, who has worked at Dumser's Dairyland on the boardwalk for five years, said the heat always brings in waves of customers.
It was one of the first sweltering days of the season, sending beachgoers into the ocean, slathering on sunscreen, and seeking shade beneath umbrellas. But with the fun comes a warning.
Ocean City Beach Patrol Sgt. Timothy Uebel said hydration is critical on days like this, especially for visitors unaccustomed to long hours in the sun. “We experienced a lot of heat-related emergencies, heat exhaustion, and then possibility of heatstroke during days like today,” Uebel said.
With summer just beginning, officials urge beach visitors to come prepared—drink water, use sunscreen, and know your limits in the heat.
