GEORGETOWN, Del.-  A teacher at the Howard T. Ennis School has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after a student with a developmental delay was left on a playground unattended for hours.

Delaware State Police say the three-year-old student was left on September 18th after several children ran away as the teacher, a 22-year-old woman from Dagsboro, was trying to line the students up to leave after recess. One of the students was the three-year-old who hid under a piece of playground equipment. Troopers say the student has a developmental delay, and remained there while everyone left the playground.

Police say hours later the student was found when the mother called the school to advise that her child did not come home on the bus.

The Indian River School District tells CoastTV news the district "immediately initiated an investigation and is currently working with the family to resolve this matter."

IRSD says a school staff member has been placed on unpaid leave. Police say the teacher was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child (a misdemeanor) and released on her own recognizance.
