Loggerhead Sea Turtle

According to MERR, the turtle has an injury on the rear of its carapace and appears to be struggling to dive. The animal is also described as having significant algae and barnacle growth on its shell.

INDIAN RIVER BAY, Del. - The Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute is attempting to locate a loggerhead sea turtle reported to be in distress in the Indian River Bay.

According to MERR, the turtle has an injury on the rear of its carapace and appears to be struggling to dive. The animal is also described as having significant algae and barnacle growth on its shell.

A separate turtle in distress was previously reported in Ocean City, while another was spotted in the Indian River Bay, just within the last month.

Officials are urging anyone who spots the turtle to report the sighting to MERR at 302-228-5029. If possible, observers are asked to stay with the turtle until a responder arrives.
