LEWES, Del. - On Thursday, November 30th, at the Lewes Mayor and City Council workshop, city officials discussed possible regulations if marijuana is not banned from being sold, manufactured, or tested within city limits. Other coastal towns, like Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, and Dewey Beach already have a ban in place. The city did not write off a total ban though, or come to a final decision.
One person who spoke with CoastTV is competently against the sale and production of marijuana in Lewes.
"I think it will attract people who are just looking for that, and here we promote strolling around, going to shops, enjoying our restaurants, enjoying what downtown Lewes has to offer, instead of coming in and stopping and getting something like that," explained Michele Buckler, who owns Sand N Stones in downtown Lewes.
Other people are not against marijuana, but are unsure how the product will benefit the city.
"The legalization of it is long overdue, however, it can be sold anywhere," said Scott Lackman, who lives in Lewes. Lackman continued, "Lewes is a very old, established, historic town, and truthfully I don't think it needs to be sold in town itself.
After listening to what some individuals had to say at the workshop meeting, city officials explained they think a public hearing would be beneficial since marijuana is such a controversial topic, and locals should have the chance to speak their opinion.
