LEWES, Del. - The Lewes Police Department is warning locals on Delmarva that a new scam is going around.
According to a post on the Lewes Police Department Facebook page a fraudster has been calling local numbers and posing as a Lewes Police Officer in an attempt to scam people out of their money.
CoastTV has covered a number of similar scams in the past and the repeated through line on all of them is that the police will never call and ask people for money over the phone.
Lewes says that if you have any doubt of a call being from an actual officer, to hang up and call the Non-Emergency Line: 302-645-6264.
The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is also warning of a scam text going around. The fake alert asks the recipient to pay for an outstanding traffic violation and to click on a link to pay.
The DMV and E-ZPass say they will not contact people over email or text to pay for a violation. Anyone who receives a suspicious text or email can report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Crime Complaint Center. When reporting, the DMV asks that the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within the text are included.
