Take a Trip 500 Years in the Past, The Nao Santa Maria is Anchored in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md- It's not uncommon to see boats of all sizes on the water in Ocean City, but this might be a new sight. Right now the Nao Santa Maria is anchored  on the Ocean City coast.

While the ship may look very old, it was considered a modern innovation 550 years ago. Of course this exact ship isn't that old. Built in 2017 it is a replica of a 15th century merchant vessel. It's the same flag ship Christopher Columbus took during is journey to America.

"His sleeping quarters where he would have slept in a ship lie this is really neat to see, where he would have spent his time during a month or so long trip across the ocean. That for the kids there are 3 cannons on board so that's a big positive," said Frank Miller with the town of Ocean City.

Just the research of what the original Santa Maria looked like took over a year. Construction took 18 months.

"The replica is faithful in terms of design, shape, and size. Of course we are missing some small details since we don't have pictures from that time," said Angel Rosa, project manager with the ship.

The ship made its journey to Ocean City on Wednesday. Beach goers could see it sailing on the ocean, with the help of tow boats.

"Although we do have two engines as it is mandatory for anything that floats and has people on-board. We do sail also. Like the original, there are square sails to catch the wind from behind and push us," said Rosa.

In the 1400's, setting sail on a voyage across the Atlantic was the equivalent of sending astronauts to space in the 21st century. Especially during a time when many people thought the earth was flat, it was a very risky and unknown venture.

A family fun experience. The town will even be bringing Jack Sparrow on board to tell his stories of sailing. History enthusiasts took pictures, went below deck, and took a couple minutes to experience the life of a sailor many years ago.

The Nao Santa Maria is sitting on the bay at third street. You can buy tickets every day until September 5 from 10 to 8.
