MILTON, Del. - The Day of the Dead, or el Día de los Muertos, is a tradition celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2 to remember deceased relatives.
Tamales, coffee, and bread were some of the food and beverages Alexandria Méndez placed on the altar to remember beloved people no longer here.
"It is a sad day, but it's a happy day knowing that they're here with us," Méndez said.
Méndez has been creating an altar at her home in the United States for the past 25 years, incorporating beliefs she brought from Puebla, Mexico.
"We believe that we have to put a path so our family can follow the path to the altar with these, the cempasuchil flower, petals. We put that path through the door and to the patio, to the yard, the front yard, so that they can follow the path to the altar," Méndez said.
For Méndez, this is an extraordinary moment every year and a tradition she has always wanted to keep alive.
"We only have our beloved family for one day. So, we try to put all the effort to put the altar with all my family in it, and it means a lot for us," Méndez said.
Méndez hopes to continue putting up the altar and hopes others do the same.
