MILLSBORO, Del. - The Millsboro Police Department's second annual Boro Hoops 3v3 basketball tournament aims to build community in a friendly and competitive way.Ā

The event takes place on Saturday, May 17 at 9 a.m. with a rain date on Saturday, May 24 at 9 a.m. Senior Corporal Wharton, who spearheads the event says the department is looking for more players.Ā

"We ask people to sign up beforehand, but if you happen to not sign up beforehand, come at least by 8:30 a.m. on the day of to get your team signed up," said Wharton.

S/CPL Wharton says signing up is easy.

"I recommend going to our website. You can go underneath the community events and you'll see the 3v3 basketball tournament. Just click on there. You can see the team applications and sign up. You have to have at least a team of three. You can have up to five players in case you want to sub people out or if you get hurt," Wharton explained.

Senior Corporal John Wharton says the idea for a 3v3 basketball tournament came after a local produce manufacturer pitched in to help pay for a basketball court.

"Millsboro doesn't have a basketball court, and we never had a basketball court within our jurisdiction other than within private neighborhoods. We partnered with Mountaire Farms and they helped pay for majority of the court. They put the basketball court on our property to allow people to have a safe place to be able to go and play basketball and not fear anything outside," said Wharton.Ā

He says he's hoping to surpass last year's turnout.

"Last year went well. We had over 250 to 300 people out here. We had 11 teams come and play and we had first, second and third place," Wharton shared as he showed the first, second and third place trophies as well as an MVP trophy.

Wharton says there will be food trucks, vendors, Beebe Medical providing health screenings and EMS on standby.Ā
