MILFORD, Del. - A proposed bike path connecting Milford to Slaughter Beach is drawing strong opposition from residents who say it threatens their property and peace of mind. Others have spoken up about concerns surrounding the plans for the Deep Creek Park project as well.
Sue Smith, who has lived on the affected road for 48 years, says the project would come at too high a cost, and not just in terms of money.
“There are just a lot of issues,” Smith told CoastTV. “But the biggest thing is that I don’t think there’s a handful of people on that road interested in having their front yard taken from them.”
Smith also questioned how much the path would actually be used. “They want to take land for maybe 8 to 10 bikers that may or may not ride from Milford to Slaughter Beach,” Smith said.
During a public hearing, Ann Waddington offered an alternative: move the path into a nearby park. “Make it a win-win for everybody,” Waddington said.
But others, like Milford local Stephen Jordan, support the idea of more nature abundant areas. “This is what living in Delaware is all about to me,” Jordan said.
A public survey on the bike path is open through next Monday, and the Deep Creek Park discussion was tabled until a later meeting date.
