OCEAN CITY, Md. - The White Marlin Open enters its final day Saturday in Ocean City, with anglers making their last push to move up the leaderboards. The white marlin division is led by the Mister Pete, which weighed an 80-pound fish Thursday. Bill Sharpe of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is estimated to win more than $3.5 million if the fish holds.
The Reel Hunter moved into second Friday with a 71.5-pound white marlin caught by Kevin Howell of Queenstown, Maryland. The fish is just a half-pound behind the next-largest qualifying catch.
The Bull Pen remains in third with a 70-pound white marlin caught by James Hood of Charleston, South Carolina. In other divisions, the MaxBet leads blue marlin with a 607.5-pound catch. The Gray Fox leads tuna with a 179-pound fish and wahoo with a 69.5-pound catch.
Mike Bohlman of Caneelin Sports Fishing said his family’s boat brought a mahi to the scales Friday, but the fish came up a half-pound short of qualifying.
“We actually went to the scales today and weighed a mahi. That was a half a pound away from qualifying, but we still got to the scales, so that was fun,” Bohlman said. “We always have fun. Our boat is all family. It’s my dad, my uncle, me and my two cousins. We just have fun out there no matter what.”
The tournament concludes Saturday, when anglers will have one final opportunity to challenge the leaders and claim a share of the prize money.
