MILFORD, Del.- Milford City Council discussed possible locations for a pallet village for the homeless Wednesday.
The locations discussed Wednesday include:
- Behind the new police station under construction
- On the land where the current police station resides after the new police station is complete
- Off of Milford Harrington Highway closer to the end of the city
During the public workshop, council expressed the importance of getting public opinion before anything moves forward. Some council members also acknowledged some people might not be open to the idea of this being in Milford.
Pallet Villages are transitional housing options for the homeless. The organization running the program, The Springboard Collaborative, also offers services like free medical checkups, help with setting up bank accounts and getting people in the program get jobs. There is already a pallet village up and running in Georgetown.
Milford city council has expressed interest in the idea in the past, but the idea is still in the proposal stage.
Martha Gerry of Milford Advocacy for the Homeless says the addition would be great for the city.
"It's just great to think that there is going to be a solution," she said. "It may not be tomorrow, but is definitely planned for our future. So I love that the city council and the pallet city that's down and run by Springboard is just really trying to make this happen."
The city still needs to go through a public hearing process before anything can be passed or any ground can be broken.
