HEAT

High temperatures this week are expected to lead to a higher use of energy.

DELMARVA -With temperatures and humidity rising in the coming days, there are recommendations to conserve electricity and help prevent power outages. Previously, theĀ Sussex County Emergency Operations Center has made requests of people and businesses.Ā

Increased demand for air conditioning and other power use during periods of extreme heat can strain the electrical grid, potentially leading to service disruptions or higher utility costs.Ā

Tips for people to conserve power:

  • Set air conditioners to 80°F or use fans instead; limit opening of refrigerators and freezers

  • Turn off non-essential appliances and lights, and limit the use of electric water heaters

  • Delay use of high-energy appliances, such as washing machines and dryers, until after 8 p.m.

  • Cook light meals that require little or no use of the oven; use a grill or microwave when possible

  • Keep window coverings closed during the hottest parts of the day to block sunlight

  • Avoid placing heat-generating devices like lamps or TVs near thermostats, which can cause air conditioners to run unnecessarily

  • Clear vents and ducts by moving furniture to allow cooler air to circulate more efficiently

Tips for businesses:Ā

  • Raise indoor thermostats

  • Turn off unnecessary lights and equipment, especially during peak hours
