REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- While pedestrian safety is important anytime of year, it is especially important during the busy summer months when lots of people visit the beach. On Tuesday, January 9th, at the Mayors and Commissioners Special Meeting, Rehoboth Beach officials will review some safety recommendations made by the Rossi Group after analyzing the recent traffic survey. Some of the recommendations include, yield to pedestrian signs on Rehoboth Avenue, walk your bike labeling on sidewalks, and pedestrian lead traffic light intervals. Rehoboth Beach does have safety precautions in place, like speed checks and light up cross walk signs.
Erin Cecil, who often runs in Rehoboth Beach, says the light up cross walks are a good step, but more needs to be done.
"The crosswalks seem to be pretty regularly spaced, and it seems like it's hard to know sometimes where those crosswalks are, so maybe more clear marking for those stops is needed," explained Cecil.
The city says it is exploring more options to make Rehoboth safer for pedestrians, which will hopefully encourage more people to walk around Rehoboth, instead of drive.
