REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - The City of Rehoboth Beach is preparing for the annual Sea Witch Festival. Throughout Rehoboth Beach, you can see decorations being put up, and parking regulation signs in place. Many stores have also decorated for the occasion. While the city is setting up this week for the highly anticipated event, the Chamber of Commerce told CoastTV News extensive preparation goes into organizing the event.
Carol Everhart, President and CEO of the Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber of Commerce explained, "This starts a year ahead, so the minute the festival is over, we meet, and we go through our big list of about 400-600 items that have to happen, we say what has to happen in January, February, and March to get to this point."
Everhart said that about 200 plus volunteers, plus help from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, cities workers, board members, and sponsors help make this event possible. For Everhart the hard work is worth it.
"My favorite part is watching the kids because when we do that parade, and they walk down Rehoboth Avenue with their costumes, they're just so happy. The families are happy, the kids are happy, and that's always what makes it worth it, makes it all worthwhile," said Everhart.
Since the city says they expect about over 200,000 visitors to attend the festival, a fence will be blocking drivers from Rehoboth Avenue in order to keep attendees safe. Signs indicating the parking restrictions in place can also be seen throughout Rehoboth Beach.
The Sea Witch Festival is not only a fun event that brings people together, it also helps out the local businesses with exposure.
Ryan Pakenas, who owns Devil Dave's in Rehoboth Beach stated, ""I think the stigma is that Rehoboth shuts down in the off season, when only a couple places really do, and its a great spot to be in the off season because people see you're going to be open for Christmas. "
The Sea Witch Festival festivities begin on Friday, October 27th, and go until Sunday October 29th. More information about the activities and start times can be found here.
