REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – With approximately seven million visitors flocking to Rehoboth Beach each year, city officials are continuing a year-long effort to complete paving work along Rehoboth Avenue.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) initially began milling and paving work in October as part of a broader initiative to improve local infrastructure. However, progress stalled over the winter months due to cold weather.
Now, with temperatures on the rise, crews are preparing to resume the project on April 6. According to DelDOT, the paving is expected to continue through May 16, with work taking place overnight between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize disruption.
Some local businesses are concerned about the potential impact on foot traffic. “With the paving outside, I think it could make it harder to tell if our business is open,” said Anabella Doherty, who works at Blue Monkey along Rehoboth Avenue. “Just having machines, any tape, cones—anything like that.”
Doherty hopes the work will be completed on time and not stretch into the peak summer season. “I would say May to July are the busiest months here,” she said. “A lot of people come in from out of town.”
Construction will pick up where it left off, beginning on 2nd Street and the Rehoboth traffic circle. The work is expected to bring lane closures and parking restrictions in the area.
