Roadwork to begin on two Rehoboth Beach streets this week

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Two streets near Rehoboth Avenue are getting renovated Tuesday.

Laurel Street and Scarborough Avenue will be getting repaved, and Laurel Street will be getting upgrades to its water main. The roads will not be closed completely during construction- but parking will be limited.

The project was initially scheduled to begin Monday, but it was delayed a day due to weather. People on Laurel Street will have their water shut off this coming Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. due to the work on the water lines.

The project initially began last year, with parts of Scarborough Street being repaved- now the rest of the street is getting the same treatment.

Public Works director Kevin Williams is asking for patience as the work goes underway.

"You'll hear the noise, you'll hear the equipment back up, alarms, those kind of things," he said. "So it's always a hassle, you know, to be on that street when it's happening. But the end product, we feel, is well worth it."

Neighbor Hoyte Decker is hopeful the work will fix a troublesome flooding problem.

"Over at my neighbor's house over there, (the rain) can get right up to the curb," he said. "And that's not even a heavy rainstorm, just a normal rainstorm."

Williams says the project will take around 8 weeks to complete. Rehoboth Avenue is also scheduled to be repaved, but that project has been delayed.
