LEWES, Del. — Drivers are slowing down through a Route 1 construction zone near Lewes, according to new data from the Delaware Department of Transportation, suggesting a speed enforcement camera installed last year is having its intended effect.
DelDOT said 54,495 speeding violations were mailed to drivers going south on Route 1 between Nov. 11, 2025, and July 17, 2026. While thousands of citations have been issued, the agency said violations have declined since the first two months of enforcement, indicating more drivers are glowing slower through the work zone.
When the camera first went live, DelDOT reported nearly 25,000 citations were issued during its first month of enforcement, including one driver recorded going 103 mph through the work zone.
The camera, located near Red Mill Pond north of the Minos Conaway Road interchange project, enforces the 50 mph work zone speed limit by citing drivers traveling at least 11 mph over the limit.
DelDOT said slower speeds help protect construction workers and improve safety for drivers. Work zones typically experience higher crash rates, and the agency said speed cameras are intended to reduce crashes by encouraging drivers to slow down.
Speed camera violations are civil penalties and do not add points to a driver's license.
