SALISBURY, Md. - The City of Salisbury has announced that David Meienschein will be the city's new police chief. Meienschein has spent the last two months as acting police chief.

The city says that Meienschein has been at the Salisbury Police Department for 36 years, with 12 of those as Assistant Chief of police.

“It is my honor to have served the citizens of Salisbury as a career officer and look forward to the future in my new role as Chief of Police,” said Meienschein. “Growing up in Salisbury, I have a vested interest in this community and will dedicate myself to leading the department by focusing on employee wellness, community collaboration, combating crime and helping our citizens feel safe.”

The city says Meienschein began his career in 1987 as a police officer and k-9 handler. During his time at the department, he rose threw the ranks, focusing on Community Oriented Policing, crime reduction, resource allocation and police-community relations. Meienschein was also in the air force from 1982 to 2003, when he retired.

According to the city, Meienschein holds a degree in Human Resource Management from Wilmington University, and has several Salisbury Police Department awards to his name. He was also a member of the 2006 graduate class of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

The city says a national search for a new police chief was conducted, narrowing down candidates to four finalists. Eventually, they say both the City administration and Citizen Police Chief Search Committee decided that the best person for the job was the one already at the department-- Meienschein.

According to the city, Meienschein will make his debut as police chief on Sept. 28 at a department press conference.
