SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - The Spanish line of Sussex County Department of Libraries' Dial-A-Story Program is back and running with new stories children can enjoy each month after 10 years.
Yannette Fantauzzi, a mother of four, has always emphasized the importance of reading to her children. The revival of this service allows her family to access stories in Spanish, supporting their bilingual education.
"It means a lot because it also helps the kids, my kids, to learn Spanish as a second language due to that in school, most of the time they only teach them English because they were born here," Fantauzzi said.
The Spanish Dial-A-Story line received over 50 calls in its first month since reintroduction.
Tracie Hitchens from Sussex County Department of Libraries said, "I think it's great that they can hear a story in Spanish and one in English, and they could compare how it sounds, but they can also be exposed to literature that is Spanish-based stories that come from the Spanish culture being read in Spanish, which opens up their world and gives them another way to see literature."
Now that Fantauzzi knows about it, she is already planning when and where to call in.
"If I'm driving somewhere, I could call the line and put the line in Spanish for them to listen to the story while I'm driving, or if I'm doing some work at home, I could just call the line and put them sitting down for them to listen to this story as well."
For Fantauzzi, the Spanish line is also a way to show the kids the language and culture where their parents come from.
