Delaware- Sussex County is gearing up for a meaningful and inspiring weekend-long celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. The events are scheduled from Jan. 12 to 15. The events, spanning various venues throughout the county, promise a diverse range of activities, from musical and dance programs to banquets and a worship service. Our very own CoastTV Chief Meteorologist Paul Williams will emcee one of the events taking place.
On Friday, Jan. 12, the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice is set to host an inspirational musical celebration titled "MLK: From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter” at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. CoastTV Chief Meteorologist Paul Williams will excite the crowd as the emcee. The program will highlight music of the struggles of the '60s and '70s civil rights movements, gospel, soul, and praise dance. All of this will be performed by local artists. Tickets for this powerful event are priced at $25, with children under 12 admitted for free with reserved tickets. The ticket sales will be used to support various programs of the SDARJ, including scholarships, academic recognition, criminal justice reform, Black Voices Magazine, and racial reconciliation workshops. The Celebration doesn’t stop there. Saturday, Jan. 13 The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Organization hosts its annual banquet at 4:30 p.m. The banquet will be held at the CHEER Center, located at 20520 Sand Hill Rd., Georgetown. Keynote address will be delivered by State Representative Esthelda (Stell) Parker Selby. The weekend festivities will culminate on Jan. 15 when the MLK Celebration Organization holds a Holiday Community Worship Service at 10 a.m. The venue for this spiritual gathering is Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 23115 Slaughter Neck Rd.
