MILLSBORO, Del. - Sussex County officials cut the ribbon on a new EMS medic station Monday, designed to serve the growing Millsboro, Dagsboro and Frankford communities.
Located at 26929 Dickerson Road in Millsboro, the new medic station for Sussex County Emergency Medical Services has already began enhancing emergency response times with easier access to north and southbound routes along the U.S. 113 corridor, according to the Sussex County Council President Douglas B. Hudson.
In 2024, Medic 103 crews responded to 3,639 calls for service, with an average response time of just under nine minutes. Since 2009, Sussex County has built medic stations in Laurel, Long Neck, Ocean View, Lewes and Seaford, moving away from older models of renting or co-locating with volunteer companies.
"It means a lot for the year in terms of response times and in terms of having people in the area and its location is great. As the county grows, we need to grow with the county." said Hudson.
The $1.8 million, 4,300-square-foot single-story facility is the sixth free-standing station the county has built in recent years exclusively for EMS crews, said officials. The building includes two garage bays for four emergency vehicles, along with office and conference space, a kitchen, a day room, sleeping quarters and a fitness area.
Deputy Director Robert Mauch said, “We appreciate the County Council and Administration’s vision and support, which will ensure Sussex County EMS continues to meet its charge on each and every call, 24 hours a day.”
Funding for the new station came from the county’s share of realty transfer taxes collected from property sales.
“Ensuring a timely and professional response is a sacred duty, and we take that seriously," said Hudson. "Whether that’s adding 9-1-1 dispatchers, building new stations for our award-winning paramedic service, or providing millions of dollars to the volunteer fire service each year. We’re proud of the work to keep our first responders first-rate.”
The new station became operational in February. Sussex County's EMS network now includes 11 fixed stations and one seasonal unit.
