Tax season

DELAWARE - Delaware's Division of Revenue is set to initiate the processing of 2023 individual income tax returns on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024. The state says that as a result of fraud prevention measures, refunds will not begin to be issued until Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

Taxpayers are strongly encouraged to opt for electronic filing, as paper returns undergo a lengthier processing period. Online filing options are available at tax.delaware.gov or through various electronic filing programs, enabling individuals to file for free.

Opting for direct deposit for refunds is advised to expedite delivery. The deadline for filing Delaware Personal Income Tax for this tax year is set for Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

The state says that taxpayers should be aware of Delaware's lack of reciprocity agreements with other states. Anyone who worked in Delaware, but was not a resident, must file a Delaware tax return. Additionally, Delaware residents employed out-of-state are obligated to file returns both in Delaware and the state where they worked.

By state law, employees in Delaware should receive their 2023 W-2 employment forms by Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024. If individuals have not received their W-2 by the stipulated date, they are advised to promptly contact their employer.
