SALISBURY, Md.- The City of Salisbury will begin resurfacing the tennis courts at City Park on Friday, June 20, as part of a larger push to improve public recreational spaces across the city.
The tennis courts, located between Beaver Dam Drive and Main Street along North Park Drive, will be closed to the public through June 30. City officials say the timeline could shift depending on weather conditions.
Mayor Randy Taylor emphasized the courts’ historical significance and personal value to the community, as well as their importance in his upbringing.
“The City Park Tennis Courts hold a tremendous amount of history. The former manager of Jimmy Connors, William F. ‘Bill’ Riordan, recruited California players to teach lessons at these courts in the summer of the mid-1960s. A photo hangs in my office that memorializes those moments,” Taylor said. “Bill Riordan was a childhood mentor of mine, and I am so glad, as the current mayor, that the City of Salisbury continues to invest in this facility from which so many have benefited! I am looking forward to the completion of this overdue project!”
Mike Dryden, the city’s director of field operations, said the resurfacing reflects Salisbury’s commitment to promoting community wellness and outdoor activity.
“We’re excited to announce the resurfacing of our city tennis courts—a vital investment in our community’s health and recreation,” Dryden said. “These upgrades will provide a safer, more enjoyable experience for players of all ages and skill levels, encourage more active lifestyles, and support local programs and tournaments. This project is a step forward in enhancing our public spaces and fostering a stronger, healthier community.”
