OCEAN PINES, Md. - The first annual Steel Blue Care Package Project kicked off today at the Ocean Pines Yacht Club.Â
John Latham is a Marine Corps Reserves veteran and he came to this event to make care packages for active military.
"Hopefully this will make their day a little bit brighter to get something from home," Latham said. "Doing things for the military is very near and dear to my heart."
The event had a goal of 250 care packages and they ended up with a total of 750 care packages completed with 100 people in attendance who volunteered. Â
The care packages were full of well wishes, flags, toiletries and more. A lot of the people on hand today know what these soldiers are going through, as many in attendance were veterans.Â
Rick Farr is a U.S. Air Force veteran and he said he's glad to do events like these.
"It's important to stay involved to support our troops that we have overseas," Farr said. "There's times when you're out in the field and you're alone and they don't have home with them and this is a little bit of home that we bring to them."
Organizers said the next steps in this process are sending the packages off to different organizations who will send to the troops overseas.Â
