Detectives determined that a black man exited a maroon Kia Sportage and fired several rounds at the victim before fleeing in the car.

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State Police have arrested three teenagers, including 18-year-old Leslie McGuire of Dover, in connection with the shooting that injured a 19-year-old man last week on Nathaniel Mitchell Road.

The shooting took place on April 17, around 6:14 p.m., when troopers responded to the 1500 block of Nathaniel Mitchell Road for reports of gunfire. A 19-year-old man, who had been shot, brought himself to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives determined that a black man exited a maroon Kia Sportage and fired several rounds at the victim before fleeing in the car. Nearby, an occupied house and two cars were also struck by gunfire. Witnesses reported three black teenage boys wearing ski masks inside the fleeing car.

Arrests and Charges

On April 24, detectives arrested McGuire, along with a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, all from Dover. Each was charged with multiple felonies including Assault 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Reckless Endangerment (four counts), Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony, Criminal Mischief, and Conspiracy Second Degree.

  • Leslie McGuire was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $536,000 cash bond

  • The 15-year-old boy was arraigned by Kent County Family Court and committed to Stevenson House Detention Center on a $60,000 cash bond

  • The 16-year-old boy was arraigned by Kent County Family Court and committed to Stevenson House Detention Center on a $60,000 secured bond

Later that evening around 9:05 p.m., troopers spotted a maroon Kia Sportage, reported stolen from Barratts Chapel Road in Felton, traveling north on Walker Road. When troopers attempted a stop, the car took off. After a pursuit through several roads, the SUV stopped on Sorrell Circle in Smyrna, where five occupants ran away.

A coordinated search involving Delaware State Police Aviation, K-9 units, and allied law enforcement led to the arrest of four teenagers. Three were charged that night with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. A 10-year-old child found at the scene was not charged. Investigators determined these teenagers were not involved in the Nathaniel Mitchell Road shooting.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives continue to review video footage and investigate other possible incidents linked to the suspects. Additional charges are anticipated.
