Town of Berlin issues alert to cut power use during peak hours

Officials in Berlin are encouraging locals to reduce energy use during peak afternoon hours in an effort to lower overall costs and promote efficiency.

BERLIN, Md. — Officials in Berlin are encouraging locals to reduce energy use during peak afternoon hours in an effort to lower overall costs and promote efficiency.

The town has issued a “Peak Shaving Alert” for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 23 through 25. Each day, the peak shaving period will run from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Peak shaving helps the town avoid high costs associated with heavy electricity use during the hottest part of the day.

Town officials suggest the following tips to reduce energy use:

  • Run dishwashers, washing machines and dryers either before or after the 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. window

  • Adjust thermostats by a few degrees to reduce strain on cooling systems

  • Turn off lights and electronics when not in use

  • Charge electric vehicles and other devices outside of the peak shaving period
