Secretary of Education Cindy Martin says the federal funds being withheld go towards educational advancement including teacher training and migrant education programs.

DELAWARE - The U.S. Department of Education has announced they will not provide previously scheduled federal K-12 education funds to Delaware.

Delaware Secretary of Education, Cindy Martin, said the state had planned to receive $26.6 million from the federal government, amounting to 10.5 percent of the total federal K-12 funding.

These investments traditionally support teacher training, English language acquisition and migrant education programs. Martin said there are additional withholdings for adult basic education programs.

Martin said the district and charter school leaders are meeting this week to discuss the full impacts and contingency plans.

This announcement comes after the Indian River School District voted to approve a 10 percent school tax hike, the maximum increased allowed under Delaware law. IRSD School Board President Mark Steele said this was critical after two separate proposals to raise property taxes were rejected.
