Unconfirmed Tornado in Milford Leaves Extensive Damage

MILFORD, Del. - An unconfirmed tornado in Milford Tuesday morning may have been the beginning of a series of tornadoes that hopscotched through Dover and all the way to New Castle County.

The city of Milford tells us the Haven Lake area saw extensive damage. Milford Public works hopes to have power restored by Tuesday evening in the Haven Lake area, but said all other power outages were minor, and were restored by noon.

Trees were snapped in half, downed power lines, and debris was scattered everywhere.

"When I was going to Dover this morning, on my way to New Castle, my boss told me to turn around because it ain't worth driving in that kind of weather," said Barry Hill, Milford resident. "I went through three tornadoes in my life in Florida, and when you look at the debris field, and the "v" cut through trees, I'm sure if you flew over it, you will see a clear-cut path."

Jeremy Tucker from Delaware Electric Cooperative said, "We've started responding to power outages at about 7:30 this morning. Some of them involved tornadoes, we were surprised at the number of small tornadoes that touched down across our service territory and the significant damage they caused."

He says as of Tuesday afternoon, 16,000 co-op members were without power. He adds there's a chance some of the hardest hit areas will remain in the dark through Tuesday night into Wednesday.
