LEWES, Del. - The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission have decided to close the record for a proposed ordinance that would have rezoned Belmead Farm from an agricultural residential district to a planned commercial district. The decision came during a commission meeting Tuesday afternoon and a vote has been deferred.
Laura Michnya, who lives near Belmead Farm with her family, said commercial development would worsen traffic and noise near the nearby Love Creek Elementary School.
“There’s already a lot of traffic,” Michnya said. “The added noise and congestion wouldn’t be right for a space so close to a school.”
Regina Ayers, another neighbor, agreed. “I have a friend who teaches at Love Creek, and it takes her 30 minutes just to get around the corner,” she said.
However, not everyone opposed the development. Dr. Tam with Beebe Healthcare previously said the plan could help provide more affordable housing for medical workers.
The application is expected to come up for a vote at a later date.
