DELAWARE - The upcoming Delaware Ag Week event, set to take place at the Delaware State Fairgrounds from Monday, Jan. 8 to Thursday, Jan. 11, will shine a spotlight on agricultural safety, particularly concerning rural roads.

In collaboration with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety and the Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police, the Delaware Farm Bureau (DEFB) will host a presentation aimed at addressing rural road safety tailored specifically for farmers.

Scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall at the Delaware State Fairgrounds, the presentation, titled "Improving Road Safety for Farm Equipment – It’s Up to All of Us," will cover various topics.

These include:

  • Understanding the risks on rural roads
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Managing increased traffic
  • Implementing enhanced hazard lighting on equipment
  • Effective equipment escorting
  • Collaborating with law enforcement
  • Ensuring safe travels

“I have personally had several near misses on the roadways when moving equipment. We have to accept that the public doesn’t fully understand the potential danger. We need to plan in a way that minimizes our risk and theirs at the same time,” DEFB Executive Director and farmer Don Clifton said. “The reality is that every step we take to ensure the safety of ourselves, our workers, and our community is an important one. It could save lives.”
