Coastal Catch With Chan: Kaisy's Delights

LEWES, Del. - Kaisy's Delights is bringing Austrian- Hungarian cuisine to the coast. Owner Thierry Langer says Kaisy's is the only place in the world that sells latkes in a drive-thru, and he says the drive-thru is very popular for breakfast items and coffee.

The name Kaisy's Delights, originates from kaiserschmarrn which means "imperial mess," because it is a mess when it is being made.

"Think of the fluffiest pancake you've ever had. This is something you can find everywhere in Tyrol which is a wonderful area now across the border between Austria and Italy," said Langer.

Langer, who was born in France, built the restaurant's concept around the Kaisy. He says the fluffy pancake was a major family staple during skiing trips on the Austrian alps. So when he realized no one knew about it in America, he brought it to the coast.

"The concept being the culinary journey through the Austrian Hungarian empire with a French touch," he said.

Their key item can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dessert.

Plus Kaisy's Delights now offers a "finer" dining experience, at the Zum Chalet, which resembles a chalet in the alps.

"The place [the chalet] has one kitchen but three different types of service ... [you can] grab a sandwich and go ... you can also go and help yourself ... in the counter service area, or you can have something much more refined," said Langer.

You can sit down and order anything of the menu, like a Wienerschnitzel, Chicken Paprikash, pastries, coffee, and a waiter will serve the dish on fine china.

"The Austrians say Gemütlichkeit which means its comfortable its cozy, it's just a nice place to go to," said Langer.

The chalet is only open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., but counter service remains open until 6 p.m.
