DOVER, Del.- As his website says, too EDM for pop, too pop for EDM. Growing up in the outer suburbs of D.C., Teddy Beats actually started his music career in hip-hop. The DJ then made the transition into dance music.
"I started dabbling in dance music and one of the first dance songs I made got picked up by Sirius XM Chill which was super exciting," said Teddy Beats.
During the shutdown, Teddy says he was one of the luckier DJs. He was able to continue mixing and creating music. But he says nothing beats being able to perform live in front of an audience again. His first show back, he got to open for Grammy award winner, Zedd.
"Everybody was in great spirits and just ready to party and have a great time. We just connected, me and the crowd. We had a lot of fun there and it was a great way to come back. Now that's the bar," said the artist.
He plans on raising that bar this weekend at Firefly.
"So my goal as a DJ and a musician is to always pull in something familiar, but add something new. I feel like that really helps people connect and be open to it. So I've been producing and creating a lot of remixes of popular songs," said the DJ.
This is his second time performing at Firefly. In 2019, he played at the silent disco. But those aren't his only trips to the first state. Growing up in Maryland and to this day with his wife, he frequents the Delaware beaches.
"Every summer I spent in Delaware. Rehoboth was a big go-to. We would go to Bethany. I broke my arm there when I was little so that's a memory that sticks with you," said Teddy Beats.
While Firefly is his next step, Teddy Beats has big plans for the after the festival. The DJ is starting back up his college tour. New merch is available now. And he has new songs and mixes waiting to be released to new, and familiar fans.
You can see Teddy perform at the Firefly fest at "The Nest" this Thursday and Saturday.
